  • A bursa is a fluid filled cushion that is present in various locations in your body to protect soft tissues like muscle and tendon from boney ridges. With the shoulder it is common that the subacromial bursa can become impinged due to arm movement while in poor posture. Yes, medication and steroid injections can provide temporary relief for this but will not address the cause and the pain will inevitably return. Correcting your posture, strengthening your shoulders, gaining flexibility throughout your trunk, and learning new movement techniques for ADLs especially lifting will provide a more permanent solution. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs addressing shoulder pain, that will get you feeling better, able to manage your condition long term, and back on track quickly. • The shoulder is a common joint to notice painful arthritic changes as you get older. Having a worn-out joint is an issue in itself but may not cause you pain without other accompanying conditions such as poor posture and an imbalance of strength and flexibility in your shoulders and upper back. Unless you correct those things, you don’t know if your arthritis is severe enough to need more than physical therapy to feel good again. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs addressing arthritic shoulder pain, that will get you feeling better, able to manage your condition and back on track quickly. • If you have failed at conservative treatment efforts with an arthritic shoulder, your doctor may recommend a shoulder replacement. Your surgeon will do a procedure in which all or part of the shoulder joint will be replaced with a prosthetic implant. Replacement options include partial or total by using either anatomic or reverse positioned implants. Pre-operative physical therapy could make your post-op recovery easier and quicker. Addressing the same postural stability and strength imbalances as with all other shoulder rehab programs will be necessary. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for pre-op and post-op shoulder replacement, that will ensure your full return to enjoying an active lifestyle. • AC joint separation or shoulder separation refers to the dislocation of the clavicle (collar bone) from the acromion (part of the shoulder blade) and happens with a blow to the shoulder or a fall on to the shoulder. Treatment usually involves immobilization in a sling for a period of time and physical therapy. There can be long term instability especially if you aren’t consistent with PT and your home exercise program. Regaining stability to the joint through immobilization, and improving and maintaining muscular stability in the long term is the goal. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your AC joint separation, that will ensure your full return to enjoying an active lifestyle. • When learning about shoulder problems, you hear terms like arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. All of these conditions usually cause pain and occur because there is a faulty articulation in the shoulder joint. One in which bones come into contact with each other in areas where they shouldn’t. This causes unprotected bone to bone contact and/or pinches the soft tissues (bursa and/or tendons) between the two bones (humerus and shoulder blade). This is an impingement syndrome. It can be very painful and can also refer pain down the upper arm as far as the elbow in many cases. It is absolutely our posture, therefore shoulder position, that has a causative factor in this condition. When your shoulders are rounded you are significantly more likely to have an impingement. Only in cases of having a significant bone spur, will correcting your posture, not remedy this problem. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your impingement syndrome, that will ensure your full return to enjoying an active lifestyle. • This shoulder surgery is performed to prevent the continued impingement of soft tissues between the humerus and acromion. This is done by removing bone in the region where the continued impingement occurs. This is done often in conjunction with a rotator cuff repair to protect the repaired tissues from further trauma. To achieve the best overall long-term outcome, it is important that you fully regain your optimal strength and mobility after surgery. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your post op subacromial decompression, that will ensure your full return to enjoying an active lifestyle. • A subluxation of your shoulder is when, due to instability or trauma, your shoulder joint partially dislocates but not fully. Whether this happens from trauma or due to joint instability with a non-traumatic activity, it is a sign that you need to improve your muscular strength and stability as well as retrain yourself physically and mentally to use improved posture and movement technique to protect your shoulder. Otherwise, you are more vulnerable to further injury and possibly a full dislocation. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your shoulder instability and subluxation, ensuring your full return to safely enjoying an active lifestyle. • If you have dislocated your shoulder and it is still dislocated, you need to get to the emergency room closest to you. The longer you wait the harder and more painful it will be to reduce (put back in place). If you dislocate chronically, yet do not need surgery, you can improve your joint stability through proper shoulder stabilization training along with improved postural awareness and control to protect your shoulder for function. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your shoulder instability, ensuring your full return to safely enjoying an active lifestyle. • A labral tear is a tear in the ring of cartilage tissue around the head (ball) of the humerus (upper arm bone). Having a tear in this tissue creates an unstable joint prone to subluxation if not dislocation. The severity of the tear dictates the severity of the instability. The two most common tears are the SLAP lesion and the Bankart Lesion. They are distinguished by the nature of the tear and are surgically repaired if significant enough. Your surgeon will advise you on your best option. In some cases, physical therapy is recommended instead of surgery. In all cases physical therapy is required after surgery. Stabilization training and improving postural awareness and control is required regardless of the option. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your shoulder instability due to a labral tear, ensuring your full return to safely enjoying an active lifestyle. • The rotator cuff is a collective term for a group of four shoulder muscles. Together their attachments at the shoulder joint form a cuff that surrounds the head of the humerus and is instrumental in keeping it in the “socket”. The tendons of the cuff are in a vulnerable location and are subject to trauma from injury, over-use, and accelerated degenerative changes due to poor posture and joint mechanics with our daily use. A tear in one or more of the 4 tendons can gradually occur of a long period of time or could happen all at once. Tears can range from just minor “fraying” of one tendon to full thickness disruption of all 4. The severity and the appropriate treatment can vary greatly and should be guided by diagnostics and the help of an orthopedic specialist. Pain isn’t always an indicator of severity. A debridement is a surgical procedure that involves trimming up fraying or a partial tear that does not require a repair. Surgical repairs vary in technique as well as post op restrictions and requirements for recovery. Physical therapy can be instrumental at all levels of severity and stages of recovery and is dependent on your individual circumstances. The rehabilitation of a repaired rotator cuff is a big commitment and can take 9-12 months to really return to your absolute best. • Biceps tears are very common and can happen with a traumatic incident or could happen with an ordinary daily activity depending on the circumstances. Due to our posture, we can gradually overuse and cause micro-trauma over a long period of time. Add natural weakening of tissues due to degenerative changes with age, improper hydration, poor stabilization at the shoulder complex and/or possibly side effects of various chemicals/medications and their interactions with each other and you have the environment for soft tissue failure with exertion. Many biceps tears are left untreated with very little limitations after the fact. In some cases, depending on severity, location, pain, and weakness, surgical repairs are performed to re-anchor the tendon. Post op care will involve immobilization and physical therapy to regain strength and mobility especially for the shoulder complex to ensure healthy mechanics with future use and activity. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in educating you on what to expect for the recovery process as well as creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your biceps repair. • The humerus is your upper arm bone and can be fractured or broken with various forms of trauma. It usually takes a significant amount of force unless there is poor bone density from osteoporosis. Minor fractures can heal without surgery but usually require attention to maintaining or regaining shoulder mobility while you go through a period of pain and weakness that prevents your usual use of your arm. In other cases, the fracture can be significant enough and unstable requiring surgery using plates and screws to stabilize it for the healing process. When the trauma of surgery is added to the circumstances, physical therapy is again required for the full recovery after the injury. Usually, people do well and fully recover with minimal limitations in the long term. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in educating you on what to expect for the recovery process as well as creating personalized programs for rehabilitating your humerus fracture and or surgical repair. We will guide your full return to safely enjoying an active lifestyle. Call us. We can get you started right away.

  • Shoulder weakness can occur just as it can occur anywhere else in the body. Changes in lifestyle, activity level, or being sick and sedentary for a period of time are all common reasons for becoming weak. A weak shoulder complex is an unstable shoulder complex. That instability opens the door for worsening posture, tendonitis, bursitis, advanced arthritis, impingement syndrome, subluxation, and various injuries with activity. Your recognition that there is weakness and instability in your shoulders and upper body, is your red flag to be proactive to prevent injury and progressive pathologies. Your team at Breaux Bridge Physical Therapy are expert in creating personalized programs for regaining your strength and stability as well as giving you the knowledge and training to have a better quality of movement and protection from injury than before.
